Onyx is a rescued German Shepherd approximately 5 years old. He had been living with his new owner about 9 months before he had an incident at a park. The new owner was charged on an aggressive dog charge. Onyx hadn’t hurt anyone; but he had gotten into a dog’s face who had come up behind him and surprised him.
I had opportunity to work with the owner and Onyx a couple of days before his appointment with a trainer whom they had been working with about this situation. The three of us did Emotional Freedom Technique, also known as Tapping, to help animals and their owners overcome emotional disturbances. EFT accesses human and animal organs by tapping on the Chinese energy meridians used in acupressure. These tapping spots help change the emotional causes of behavior or illness.
Oftentimes, an animal’s behavior is related to their person’s beliefs and their behavior. During exploration, with Onyx’s owner, she verbalized she was holding onto an old fear of being overly watchful and segregating of her deceased beloved pet Ade. She felt with Onyx she had failed again and the fear had transferred to Onyx. When she and I did Tapping, she was able to release the old fears and affirm, “Yes to new ideas.” She told me she woke up the next morning expressing, “Yes, yes, yes.”
Onyx and I met the next day. He let me know he felt a carryover from his original family of holding him ‘in prison’ and they didn’t let him have a life. When doing the discovery with Onyx, it was recognizable his present owner was doing the same thing, perhaps for different reasons, but Onyx didn’t know this. In doing the tapping, Onyx was able to claim his freedom and his ultimate affirmation was, “We are free.” I asked his person to repeat this affirmation periodically.
Onyx and his person have finished working with the trainer and me and I understand Onyx’s behavior has changed in that he is now very attentive and seems happy. That he did very well with other animals at a restaurant and with the trainer’s dog, and at the same park where the incident occurred.
I am grateful to be a part of this successful story. Here are a few words from Onyx’s person after the court hearing.
“Hi Barbara. You are doing important work. Thank YOU. The judge and prosecutor were interested in it also. It went well - charges decreased to ‘loose dog’, and will be sealed in 3 months if no other dog offense within 3 months. They dropped expenses, since I paid for the trainer and completed it all. God is so good! Thanks!”
